One of the best places to eat gelato is in a small town in Tuscany Italians call the Medieval Manhattan.

This Estruscan-walled town still has many of the tall towers built in the 12th and 13th centuries by its competitive aristocrats as symbols of wealth. San Gimignano has an award-winning gelateria and it was while staying in the town that I declared this "the" place to try as many flavours as possible. So when we returned to San Gimignano each day from our travels we would go for a stroll to the main piazza, just as the tourists were departing, and treat ourselves to a new flavour. .... After acquiring a taste for San Gimignano white wine during our stay, we headed for the gelateria for our last gelato, a very special flavour, made with Vernaccia. Also try the dolce-amaro (bittersweet). If you go: Gelateria di Piazza, on Piazza della Cisterna, San Gimignano, Italy.
