If the times really are changing in Tuscany, then helping to keep everyone cool is the region's champion ice cream maker, Sergio Dondoli. He hopes that the Blairs will fancy an ice cream during the interval of Rigoletto, for in the nearby Piazza della Cisterna his special recipe in honour of the British Prime Minister will be on offer. "I have called the recipe Hope For Europe", said Dondoli proudly. "It is an ice cream sundae with scoops representing all the different countries in Europe." There is pistacchio for Ireland, because it's so green; vanilla for England because it's their favourite flavour, and chocolate for Italy because it's my best known recipe." He added: "People here are very proud that Tony Blair is back to visit and I wanted to celebrate."
