Cocoa Week - Culinary under the towers. Despite the rather lukewarm season there are those who want to anticipate the summer. In San Gimignano has opened its second edition the cocoa gelato week, promoted by Sergio Dondoli in Piazza dell Cisterna, which will close next Sunday.

Ice-cream takes the podium

SAN GIMIGNANO - Master ice-cream maker Sergio Dondoli, after the diplomas at the Rimini international ice-cream fair, takes the podium at the Massa school of catering. A real “Prof”, with apron and white hat, called for a special ice-cream course to be given to fourth- and fifth-year cookery and pastry students. Three lectures ending on March 21, to blend, in the best of manners, the cold product with technology of commerce, custards, spirits and ingredients. A new profession for Dondoli, the ice-cream maker of Piazza della Cisterna, President of the Region’s and Province’s Cogel Fipe ice-cream makers, to teach the art of creating good taste, safeguarded with his secret recipes and bearing the San Gimignano mark. At the end of the course, on March 25, he will pose in front of the Belgian TV cameras for a live broadcasting.

.... The farewell dinner was a real dream... Ice-cream was the most luscious and appreciated delicacy. Sergio Dondoli, master ice-cream maker of Piazza Cisterna, made two trips to the villa, bringing his choicest homemade product, cream and yoghurt mixed with wild berries. For little Leo, white peach ice-cream, the same one enjoyed daily by Blair and his guests. More than 30 kilos of Dondoli's ice-cream were served.

He started in 1982 in Germany, then transferred in 1992 to San Gimignano, and has conquered, with his luscious ice-cream, everyone's favour and palate. In the guide Let's Go - Italy '97, Sergio Dondoli's cream and chocolate ice-cream is described as "simply orgasmic", Eurotour Toskano '95 speaks of "Gelateria di Piazza" as one of the best ice-cream shops in Italy. With his latest specialty, the pine-seed flavour, he has defeated the 70 contestants of the Regional Selection, representing Tuscany - with two colleagues - at the Italian Championship in Venice on 18 and 19 November. And it was really Sergio, with his "Curva Fiesole" naturally in purple (Translator's Note: the colour of the Florentine soccer team) who served dessert at Simona Ventura's and Stefano Bettarini's wedding banquet.
